2020 Climate Leadership Outlook

2020 Climate Change

Many U.S. states and electric utilities are making more ambitious clean energy commitments than ever before, including some committing to hit 100% clean energy targets by 2050 or earlier.

On average, 5.9% of residential and 5.8% of business customers surveyed say there is no climate change.

On a 0-4-point scale, where 0 = “there is no climate change” & 4 = “climate change is very serious,” the average score is 2.6.

Using a behavioral driver model, the average Sustainability Index– Climate score for electric utilities is 26. *

The highest sustainability scores are: Washington, D.C. (30.4) Florida (29.3) Maryland (29.1) Mississippi (28.6)

The lowest sustainability scores are: West Virginia (16.7) Wyoming (13.1)

There is room for improvement, starting with understanding what drives customer views about the sustainability of their electric utilities and focusing on communication and engagement in the areas that lead to higher customer support for sustainability plans.
